Alonso González-Villalobos is a practicing attorney (criminal and human rights cases) and an experienced international development consultant and manager specializing in rule of law, civil society empowerment and participatory governance (criminal & community justice, human rights, crime prevention, compliance, integrity/transparency, international law, and alternative dispute resolution).
He has more than 22 years’ experience representing clients, implementing projects and achieving results in Mexico, the USA, Canada, Spain, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Argentina. From 2010 to present 2024, he served as Country Director of different international NGOs, and as Director/Deputy Director of various development programs (funded by USAID, INL, USDOL, USDS, and other agencies).
His work has focused on criminal and community justice reform and the reduction of impunity, legal education and legal profession strengthening, civil society and private sector engagement to address public issues, and the advancement of human rights.
González-Villalobos obtained his degree in Law at Universidad Panamericana, in Guadalajara, Mexico and then a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Other graduate studies include international arbitration, human rights, legal reform, and trial advocacy and adversarial systems, conducted at institutions based in the USA, France, Chile, and Mexico. He has extensive academic and training experience, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has taught in Mexico, the USA and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, training law and social development faculty and students, NGOs, and civil servants from a variety of institutions.
González-Villalobos has written several articles on human rights, community justice and criminal and international law, published, among others, by the Organization of American States.
Alonso González-Villalobos is fluent in Spanish and English and is affiliated with the Barra Mexicana, Colegio de Abogados, the Illustrious and National College of Lawyers of Mexico, and the International Law Section of the American Bar Association, and from 2022-2024 held the position of General Secretary of Mexico’s General Council for the Legal Profession.
